MAZDA Ownership 101: How to Check Transmission Fluid

If you don’t know how to check transmission fluid, it’s a good skill to learn. The North Penn Mazda team can show you how to examine your fluid level and replace it with a fresh supply. But if you need to know the basics, here’s how to check your transmission fluid levels.
Getting Started
Ensure your vehicle is parked on a level road; ideally, it should also be warm to accurately read available transmission fluid. Open your hood and pull out the transmission dipstick. Wipe it clean, replace it in the transmission fluid intake, and pull it out again. Then, check the dipstick to see how much fluid is in the tank.
Ordering and Replacing Transmission Fluid
If your dipstick indicates you don’t have enough transmission fluid, you can order replacement fluid from our parts department. If your transmission fluid is discolored – it should be translucent and dark red, not opaque or rust-colored – it’s best to replace it, but you shouldn’t do it on your own; bring it to our Mazda service center, where we’ll carefully flush and replace the fluid and give the system a once-over.
Repairing Transmission Issues
If you notice that your transmission fluid tank is leaking or your transmission system isn’t performing as intended, you should bring the vehicle into our service center. Transmission problems can make your vehicle dangerous to drive as it won’t shift gears as effectively. Let our service technicians handle any transmission issues, even if you can handle fluid replacement.
