MAZDA History

Founded in 1920, Mazda has a rich history that spans over a century. The brand originated as Toyo Cork Kogyo Co., Ltd., a cork-manufacturing company that was founded in Hiroshima, Japan.

In 1921, Jujiro Matsuda took over the company and slowly pivoted it towards the automotive industry, even dropping “Cork” from its name in 1927. Its first major development was the Mazda-go, a three-wheeled truck that debuted in 1931.

Ties to Ford Motor Company

A capital alliance was formed with Ford Motor Company in 1979. The partnership was intended to strengthen the business foundation. Mazda handled many of the Ford manufacturing needs, ranging from small commercial vehicles to transmission units, which contributed to many shared plants and even platforms among Ford and Mazda.

The financial investment and shared capabilities also helped the annual production of Toyo Kogyo Co., Ltd. to surpass one million units.

Current Ownership

The corporate name for Toyo Kogyo Co., Ltd. was officially changed to Mazda Motor Corporation in 1984. The alliance with Ford Motor Company continued, as Ford continued to purchase increased stakes in Mazda; in fact, it increased to 33.4 percent in 1996, and the first non-Japanese President and CEO was appointed. During this time, Mazda worked on its long-term technology development and towards its goal of increased innovation and efficiency.

In 2008, it ended its management of the company, and it sold its last share of Mazda stock in 2015. Currently, Mazda is owned by global shareholders.
