Five Fuel Efficient Driving Habits to Learn

If you’re trying to learn how to be more fuel efficient while driving on Lansdale roads, take a moment to read our tips. Once you’ve internalized these, you’ll be surprised by just how much you start to save at the pump:

  1. Accelerate Gently: The harder you stomp on your accelerator, the more gas you use. Practice taking 5 seconds to smoothly accelerate up to 10 mph from a standstill.
  2. Plan for Traffic: There’s nothing less fuel-efficient than driving in stop-and-go traffic. See if you can leave 15 minutes early at work to avoid rush hour, and see if you can leave for work early in order to avoid the morning bustle.
  3. Moderate Speed: When you’re on the highway, keep your speed between 55 and 65 mph to maximize your fuel economy. Anything under or over this range will increase fuel consumption.
  4. Coast: When you tap your brakes to control speed, you put yourself in a position where you have to also tap your accelerator to balance out your momentum. Avoid this by coasting down to slower speeds or to a stop. This brings us to another topic: how you can save money while driving on hills. To optimize your efficiency on hills, accelerate up the first hill to build momentum. Then, use that momentum to coast down the next hill as far as you can before you start to lose momentum—hit the accelerator again. Continue to only accelerate when momentum lags and coast the rest of the time. Play around with perfecting the efficiency of this technique
  5. Turn Down A/C: Your air conditioning can increase your car’s fuel consumption by 20%. Next time you need A/C, turn it on, and then use the recirculate function to keep the cold air flowing rather than leaving your A/C on all the time.
