MAZDA Sedan Models Through the Years

Mazda Vehicles - Select Your Model | Mazda USA

Today, the Mazda3 Sedan is one of the manufacturer’s top-selling models thanks to its premium design and impressive power. Many of our customers are curious about how Mazda began selling its vehicles in the United States. The North Penn Mazdateam is here to tell you all about the history of Mazda sedan models.

1977: The MAZDA GLC

The first-ever small car offered in the United States by Mazda was the Mazda GLC. It was initially available solely as a three-door vehicle, but a five-door version was introduced in 1978. This vehicle featured a 1.3-liter SOHC engine that made 52 horsepower and accelerated from zero to 60 mph in 15.1 seconds.

1986: The MAZDA 323

After nearly a decade in American showrooms, the Mazda GLC was retired in favor of the new Mazda 323. This new Mazda vehiclewas slightly larger and longer, but it looked strikingly similar to the Mazda GLC. It had a more powerful 1.6-liter B6 engine that was fuel-injected instead of carbureted for 82 horsepower.

1995: The MAZDA Protege

While the first generation of the Mazda Protege was sold alongside the Mazda 323, the latter disappeared alongside the introduction of the second generation model in 1995. It featured a 102.6-inch wheelbase and an available 1.8-liter engine that delivered 122 horsepower. You could select between a manual and an automatic transmission.

2004: The MAZDA3

The Mazda3 as we know it was first introduced in 2004, based on Ford’s C1 driving platform. Available as a four-door sedan or five-door hatchback, this vehicle offered sporty power through a 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine. It could reach 60 mph from a standstill in around eight seconds and produced 160 horsepower.

2026: The MAZDA3 Sedan Lives On

Today, the Mazda3 Sedan provides an available turbocharged engine for an incredible 250 horsepower when filled up with premium fuel. It continues to innovate with a luxurious cabin design and a plethora of advanced technology options, which you can experience here at North Penn Mazda.
