MAZDA Finance 101: How to Transfer a Car Lease

If you’ve decided it’s time to move on from your vehicle before the lease has expired, you may be wondering how to transfer a car lease. There are several steps to the process, but it’s entirely possible to send your lease to a new owner and get ready to drive something else. Our North Penn Mazda team has crafted this guide to walk you through each step. 

Read Your Lease 

Not every leasing company allows for a lease transfer. When you first lease your vehicle, be sure to discuss all terms with our financial team to ensure a lease transfer clause is included as an option in your contract. You can always call the leasing company if you have any additional questions about terms. 

Find a New Lessee 

When it’s time to move on from your vehicle, you’ll first have to find someone to take over the lease. This can be a friend or family member, or you can advertise the lease on marketplaces like Swapalease. Once you’ve found someone, they will have to complete a credit application and submit it to the leasing company. 

Pay Any Fees 

Most of the time, completing a lease transfer will cost you an additional fee. The details can be found inside your specific contract. Once these fees are paid, your vehicle is ready to be transferred at our Mazda finance center. 

Sign All Paperwork 

Bring the new lessee to our finance center so you can both sign all required documents to complete the lease transfer. Once these papers are signed, you will relinquish your lease obligation and be able to lease or buy a new Mazda vehicle.  

Complete the Transfer 

After the swap is complete, the new lessee will have to go through all the same steps you originally did. This includes setting up insurance, and possibly taking the vehicle to the DMV to complete registration.
